Councilor
Helen Kim, MD

My name is Helen Kim and I am writing to introduce myself to you as a candidate for the MPS Council. I completed my psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999 and moved to Minneapolis to be with my husband. We agreed to a “5-year plan” to stay in Minnesota and then return to Boston or Rhode Island to be near family, friends, and colleagues….8 years and 2 children later we are still here in Minnesota – surrounded by a new surrogate family of friends and feeling increasingly rooted to our life here in Minnesota. Professionally, I have been fortunate to be part of the Department of Psychiatry at Hennepin County Medical Center where we have created the Hennepin Women’s Mental Health Program, a widely respected clinic specializing in the psychiatric care of women during reproductive transitions such as premenstrually, pregnancy, postpartum and perimenopause. For the last 5 years I have also worked at the Center for Victims of Torture, and this past year I opened a private practice to allow me more flexibility to be home with my family as well as more time to see patients for psychotherapy. I have always valued the powerful impact one can make on individual patients, but now feel ready to broaden my sphere of influence and bring my clinical, administrative and leadership skills to bear on my role as Councilor. I look forward to serving you!
