APA Assembly Representative Since completing my residency I have worked as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at three teaching hospitals: The University of Minnesota, Regions and Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). Recently, I retired from a regular schedule but still help to provide coverage at HCMC and the state hospital system. I have held almost every office in the MPS except treasurer; my wife is convinced that the organization is better off without my involvement in financial planning. Over the years I have been involved in many MPS committees and task forces; currently I am a member of the Ethics, Legislature and PAC Committees. I have been asked to respond to what I think is the most important issue facing Minnesota Psychiatry today. I think the major problem is access to care. This is a complicated issue without an easy remedy. We need increased State and Federal funding to increase the number of psychiatrists; the shortage in Child Psychiatry is especially acute. Reimbursement and discriminatory copays need to be improved in order to enable us to provide necessary biological and psychological treatments. The large number of medically uninsured in this country is a travesty and needs local, state and federal initiatives to resolve it. I enjoy working in the Assembly and think that I am effective there. I will do what I can to achieve positive changes. |
