Early Career Psychiatrist Representative
Julie Petersen, MD

I am interested in being the early career psychiatrist representative for the MPS.

I attended medical school at the University of Nebraska and graduated from residency at the University of Minnesota in 2005. I am an adult psychiatrist and currently work in part time private practice in Edina and part time for an Assertive Community treatment (ACT) team in Ramsey County.

I would like to increase member recruitment and retention with focus on trainees and early career psychiatrists. The early career is a good time to get a physician interested and involved. I think this could be done by continuing MPS involvement in the psychiatry training programs. Programs that have been successful in the past include presentations for residents by MPS members discussing different types of practice arrangements and career paths. I know I found these discussions to be very helpful in making decisions about my career after residency.

I also think it is important to clarify the role of MPS for early career psychiatrists whose lives are busy taking care of patients, building practices and having a life. This could improve membership and increase members’ involvement in advocacy. A larger membership will help MPS have a louder voice in pursuing mental health parity, improved access to psychiatrists and improved integration of mental health services with primary care physicians.
