Psychiatrists strive to see our patients in 3D; each person a complex interface of the biological, psychological, and social. We are just beginning to grasp the multidirectional interactions between mind, mood, and metabolism. The MPS Fall meeting will focus on 3 “D’s” critical in modern medicine: depression, dementia and diabetes. Depression worldwide results in 12 billion workdays lost per year. Depression is associated with roughly double the risk of developing dementia. There are 10 million new cases of dementia in the world each year. The 2024 projected cost of dementia care in the US is $360 billion. Diabetes afflicts 422 million people across the globe and causes 1.5 million deaths/year, steadily increasing. Almost 40% of American adults have prediabetes. (Sources: NIH, WHO, Alzheimer’s Association) Societal inequities play a large part in the severity of these 3 illnesses, as well as in access to care. Addressing these challenges can feel overwhelming, but recent research and new treatments provide hope. We are learning more about the microbiome, gut and brain health, and metabolism. We are in the dawn of the GLP-1 agonist era. We are finally seeing FDA approved medications for Alzheimer’s disease. Join us in October as our psychiatric community comes together to address these critical health problems of our time. Forge new professional and social connections at MPS this fall, as we celebrate our organization’s 50th anniversary. Educational Objectives
At the end of the educational activity, the learner will be able to:
