MPS Responds to Recent ICE Actions in Minnesota | January 2026

“When fear becomes chronic, it becomes toxic to mental health and community well-being.”

Recent enforcement actions by ICE in Minnesota, including the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, have deeply impacted immigrant families and created widespread fear, stress, and uncertainty across our communities. These events do not just shake the sense of safety for those directly affected. They have real and lasting mental health consequences for families, caregivers, and for people across Minnesota who are witnessing these events and questioning their own safety, trust in institutions, and sense of belonging.

When any group feels targeted or unsafe, it affects all of us. These moments shape how people experience safety, trust, and belonging in their neighborhoods, schools, clinics, and public spaces. Children and vulnerable populations are especially at risk for long-term mental health impacts when violence and instability become part of everyday life. This is collective trauma.

Improving Minnesota’s mental health care through education, advocacy, sound psychiatric practice, and achieving health equity is core to who we are. In that spirit, Minnesota psychiatrists have shared reflections on the psychological and community-wide effects of these events, which are posted here:

  • Dr W Rush | Jan 2026
  • Dr L Widmer | Jan 2026
  • Ongoing Collective Trauma | Jan 2026

MPS has also signed onto a letter from Minnesota Doctors for Health Equity, joining physicians across the state in calling attention to the health, ethical, and human costs of current enforcement practices. Minnesota Doctors for Health Equity is a statewide coalition of physicians and health professionals working toward health equity for all Minnesotans. Learn more at www.mdheq.org.

These actions reflect our commitment to speak up when public policies and practices worsen harm and undermine mental well-being. MPS will continue to advocate for policies that promote dignity, reduce trauma, and support the mental health of everyone in Minnesota.
