MPS Excited Delirium Statement, April 12, 2021
For far too long, phrases like “Excited Delirium” that have no scientific basis have been used to explain or justify injury or death to individuals in police custody and are disproportionately applied to Black men in custody. MPS stands in solidarity with the APA on this issue and firmly believes that:
  1. Excited Delirium is NOT a diagnosis recognized by the American Psychiatric Association or the DSM-5.
  2. While the DSM-5 recognizes hyperactive Delirium, this condition varies significantly from the symptoms attributed to Excited Delirium.
  3. Any mechanical or chemical interventions applied in crises scenarios labeled “Excited Delirium” must be investigated by independent bodies to examine relevant data, including the precipitating events, health outcomes for the individuals and law enforcement personnel.
The complete APA Statement about use of the term “Excited Delirium” is available here.
